DESCRIPTION:Applications open until March 6th 2025. The summer school of the USSP consortium focuses on past climate dynamics with special emphasis on the analysis of long-term carbon cycling and its implications in the understanding of present and future climates. USSP integrates lectures\, symposia\, field trips\, and exercises on the many different areas of paleoclimatology including biogeochemical cycling\, paleoceanography\, continental systems\, and all aspects of deep-time climate modelling. These techniques and systems are explored through interactive discussions of Cretaceous OAEs\, P/E hyperthermals\, the Greenhouse-Icehouse transition\, Neogene and Quaternary climate dynamics.

SUMMARY:IGS Symposia: Ice Streams and Outlet Glaciers
DESCRIPTION:Ice streams and outlet glaciers are important components of an ice sheet’s mass balance and their behaviour directly impacts on sea level. These corridors of fast-flowing ice have been described as the ‘arteries’ of an ice sheet and their distinction is largely semantic\, with ice streams bordered by slower-moving ice and outlet glaciers bordered by exposed bedrock at the surface. Since the recognition of the importance of these features in the 1970s\, there has been a huge growth in their investigation. This began with the pioneering work on West Antarctic ice streams and has subsequently expanded to studies of ice streams and outlet glaciers in all of the world’s major ice sheets and ice masses. Of urgent concern for society are recent observations of dynamic changes in ice streams and outlet glaciers\, which are thought to be responsible for an acceleration in global eustatic sea-level rise. \nIn parallel\, those studying palaeo-ice sheet beds have long-recognised the distinctive geomorphology of ice streams in both marine and terrestrial settings. The study of palaeo-ice streams offers an unprecedented opportunity to reconstruct their behaviour over time-scales much longer than modern observations permit\, generating new insights into the spatial and temporal controls on their flow\, including longer-term perspectives on retreat rates and thinning histories. The beds of palaeo-ice streams and outlet glaciers are also more accessible for investigation\, leading to new insights regarding the mechanisms of sediment erosion\, transport and deposition beneath fastflowing ice\, including the formation of subglacial bedforms.

SUMMARY:TMS-CFFR Foraminifera Spring meeting 2025
DESCRIPTION:The title of the meeting will be “Foraminifera as a marine magnifying glass: tiny details\, big insights from fossils to molecules” to reflect the various aspects of foraminiferal research ranging from paleo-approaches in climate and ocean research to experimental\, AI-based and marine environmental studies\, ecology\, taxonomy\, biogeography\, phylogeny\, as well as fossil applications in industry\, forensics and archaeology. The conference will include a one-day field trip to the newly appointed UNESCO Global Geopark at Kinnekulle with its well-known Cambrian alum shales and Ordovician limestones (June 10)\, and two full days of scientific sessions filled with keynote\, oral and poster presentations at the Wallenberg Centre (June 11 & 12). The TMS-CFFR Foraminifera Spring Meeting 2025 will be held in full hybrid mode for scientific sessions (June 11-12) to facilitate participation from overseas.

SUMMARY:Peribaltic Working Group International Field Symposium
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, the Peribaltic WG conference will be held in western Estonia\, including the islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa\, on August 25-30\, with a meeting point in Pärnu. The scientific session on August 26 will be followed by the field trip on August 27-30\, which will start and end in Pärnu. Like in the case of previous Peribaltic WG meetings\, this symposium is not restricted to topics shown in the title\, but contributions on a broad range of regionally or globally relevant Quaternary geological topics are welcome. We try to keep the meeting simple and affordable\, especially for students and senior colleagues.

SUMMARY:PalaeoArc 2024
DESCRIPTION:The 5th PalaeoArc Conference will be held between May 27-29\, 2024 in Stockholm\, Sweden. An optional 1-day fieldtrip will be organised on Sunday May 26th\, before the 3-day conference begins. Logisitcal details will be available at the start of January when we will send out another circular with information on how to register. \nThe scientific session on Wednesday May 29 will be dedicated to presentations on Arctic/sub-Arctic paleoclimates of the last interglacial (LIG). This session will be run jointly with a smaller targeted workshop entitled: LIGA: Spatial Patterns of Last Interglacial Arctic climate change (LIGA) that will continue on the Thursday and Friday of that week. \nThe purpose of LIGA is bring together paleoclimate proxy and modeling experts to compare spatial patterns of climate change during the LIG with today and investigate to what extent it is or isn’t an analog for the future.
